You adjust the timing by gauging how far the timer base moves. The timer base sets under the flywheel and an arm that protrudes out on the starboard side and is connected to the throttle lever by a link rod. The upper screw (what you called the trigger screw) is the timing adjustment screw.Had an ignition issue at end of last year and I replaced stator, timer base, powerpack and voltage regulator. Now, at idle forward it hovers around 650rpms which is great most of the time. However occasionally it dips down to 600rpms and wants to stall. No lean sneeze or anything this is not a carb issue. All throttle plates are closed at idle.The "up" flat adjustment is simple - level with (or 1-2 degrees above, with carb upsidedown) the carb body surface. You should be able to achieve proper idle speed before the cam hits the roller. Throttle pickup timing (when the cam hits the roller) should be approximatly 4 deg ATDC. To adjsut the pickup timing change the lenghth of the rod by loosening the locknut and turning the knurled nut. Timing adjustments depend on the timing mark being correct.. As long as TDC of #1 piston is at that mark, leave it alone. Second, at 8 mins 30 seconds, it covers the max timing advance adjustment procedure for the 86-88 V4s. Then 89 and later models. The key locates the flywheel in the proper relationship to the crankshaft and hence timing cannot get drastically out of spec unless someone has messed with the advance linkage. Look up underneath the edge of the flywheel and see if mark "a" on the flywheel is lined up with mark "b" on the timing plate base. That is full advanced.
