Beginning in the 1890s, New England’s small towns and rural communities drove African-Americans into urban ghettoes, Loewen contends. He wrote that Vonnegut, an Indianapolis native, grew up surrounded by sundown towns. Despite having evidence of more 100 towns in the Midwest and West with sundown signs, Loewen said Vonnegut’s illustration is the only visual he has from the area.
